Best Substitutes for Baking Vegan Cookies

Whether you call them biscuits, cookies, squares or bars, these chewy or crunchy confectionaries are an absolute treat! Created in all shapes and sizes, cookies can feature a range of ingredients like raisins, oatmeal, jam, peanut butter or the most popular addition, chocolate chips. Over the years, cookies have evolved and been shaped into entirely new forms and recipes. From stores selling scoops of cookie dough ready to eat, to the development of over hundreds of Oreo flavours, the cookie options are nearly endless.

If you are a vegan, or would like a more fitness-friendly option, there may be some ways to have your cookies and eat them too!

Cookies for Vegans

All cookie recipes are based on three primary components – flour, sugar, and some kind of fat. Here are some ingredients that could replace the usual additions in order to transform any recipe into a vegan cookie option.

  • Butter – Using three-fourths of a cup of olive oil for every cup of butter in the recipe would be the perfect substitute that would keep the cookies chewy and moist. Olive oil is also full of healthy, unsaturated fats, unlike butter. If you are looking to go all out, you could also give avocados a go, since they are also quite high in fat content.
  • Eggs – Many cookie recipes include an egg or two for added richness. You could easily replace this with a quarter cup of silken tofu, banana, soy or coconut, or flax seeds.

Additionally, here are some other substitutions you could make for other vegan desserts:

  • Honey – This ingredient can be replaced by agave, maple syrup, golden syrup or date syrup.
  • Buttermilk – Adding one tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar to vegan options like soy or rice milk will replicate the flavour and tang of buttermilk.
  • Cream – If you cannot find vegan cream, coconut milk is also a great option to consider.

So, if you are vegan and love cookies and rich desserts, all hope is not lost! Get baking!
